Our hosts, Roland (Dutch) and Mercedes (Spanish), made us very welcome and are a mine of useful information and advice – they both speak excellent English. For us it was an excellent and very reasonably priced base from which to look for wildlife, particularly the rare Iberian lynx, as well as for sight-seeing. My wife and I stayed at Villa Matilde for 7 nights at the beginning of March 2017 and I would recommend it to anyone planning to visit the area. I would definitely recommend Villa Matilde as a lovely base when visiting the area.… The area is a real biodiversity hotspot which is great to see still exists in Europe. We spent 3 days with Iberian Lynx Land and saw some amazing wildlife, including sightings of 3 beautiful Lynxes. Roland and Mercedes were excellent hosts and were extremely knowledgeable about the area and its wildlife. Not luxurious, but perfectly fine and most importantly very quiet. The accommodation was very clean and comfortable, with constant hot water. We also had packed lunches made every day which was great for us as we were out all of the time and there weren’t any local shops that we could see. They were very flexible with breakfast times and all of the food was very good, always with fresh ingredients from the garden, including honey from their own bees. We chose to have breakfast and evening meals at the Villa. The place was easy to find using the directions provided and Roland gave us a warm welcome. We stayed for 5 nights in April with the primary aim of looking for the Iberian Lynx as well as the area’s other animals and birds. Not only did she introduce us to all the best lynx-watching spots, but showed us some less well known areas, a great many plants and birds, and even an eagle owl – a bird we would never have found by ourselves.įinally, our fellow guests were all friendly and interesting too, so if you are going to Sierra de Andujar to watch birds or animals rather than kill them, or if you just want to enjoy the scenery, you are probably more likely to find like-minded guests at Villa Matilde than anywhere else in the area. Local fauna is completed by the villa’s 3 friendly dogs and half-a-dozen beautiful cats who gambol around the place – but don’t worry if you are allergic, they never come inside.Ī word about Mercedes’ guiding skills we booked her to show us round for the first two days and she proved not only an excellent guide but very good company.

We walked in the villa’s own unspoilt woods on the first evening and saw signs of deer, wild boar and badgers and at night we could hear frogs and owls.

There is a shower room with basin and toilet across the corridor. Our room, la Encina, in the basement, was simply furnished but the beds were warm and comfortable, which was all we needed. Breakfast included a variety of home-made jams and even a fresh egg from the villa’s own chickens. Coming back tired, cold and hungry after 12 hours up a mountain looking for lynx, a crackling log fire and a piping bowl of delicious, home-made soup was exactly what we needed - and the wine was excellent too. They are clearly used to catering for various dietary requirements and Roland, who was on chef duty throughout our stay, produced hot, tasty, nourishing meals for two pescatarians, one of whom cannot eat wheat, without once repeating the menu.
